We provide a unified forum for those involved in the business sectors of technology, telecommunications, e-commerce and e-business and enable those companies to proactively address issues of common concern.

Companies wishing to become full members of this new division may contact the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce. For further information or for any questions relating to the activities of the Business Technology Division, please contact the Divisional Coordinator.

The 2008/09 Chairperson of the Business Technology is Ronnie Viera.

Issues/Projects:

  1. Wired Wednesdays – Once a month the Division hosts these after work cocktail networking events for industry professionals. Each month the event is sponsored by a member who presents a topic of interest for the first 15 minutes of the evening. The intent is to increase membership at the Chamber and to provide a forum where those in the technology industry can talk “shop”. The concept will be revisited at the end of the year. Those interested in attending can register on-line at the Division’s web-site: www.businesstechnology.bm
  2. Disaster Recovery – In January last year the Division successfully hosted a forum for members which gave a cursory insight into Disaster Planning practices and the Fabian experience within the Bermuda business community. Some lessons learned and best practices were covered with a view to encouraging business to implement disaster recovery and business continuity plans. They developed their own website: www.disasterplanning.bm to be used as a vehicle for the exchange of information in this regard. The Committee has also written to the Minister of Labour & Home Affairs, identifying several key points that they believe would help improve the communications between Government and the private sector during National Emergencies. It is the hope to work towards a collaborative partnership that best serves the needs of the community. The Committee is to follow up with the Minister.
  3. Education – Every year the Committee participate in the Future Leaders Event and Careers Fair by providing an information booth and speakers. This year was no different. Dr. Green was also invited to speak to the Committee last month regarding IT curriculum, distance learning and collaboration with the business community.
  4. Industry – The Committee is working together with the Ministry of Telecommunications and E-Commerce (MTEC) on issues as outlined in the Green Paper e.g. Data protection, Child pornography, Freedom of Information etc. The Chamber has hosted a forum on such issues. Nancy Volesky, a member of the Committee was recently appointed Director of E-Commerce for MTEC. The Committee also intends to put questions to the broader membership in order to decide internally what issues to focus on.
