The East End Division represents a wide variety of businesses from Bailey’s Bay to St. George’s and St. David’s. After being dormant for a number of years, the East End Division was reactivated in December 2008 as a way to bring together the East End merchants to develop solutions to the economic misfortunes of the East End. The division has made substantial progress in achieving its primary goals, which are:
- To act as a forum to provide accurate and timely information for the business community.
The East End Division is the only community organization providing timely and transparent information to its members and the community. Through our monthly meetings which are regularly attended by key people in the Police Services, the Department of Tourism, Corporation of St. Georges and the Chamber’s Executive Vice President, members get information from primary sources and no longer have to operate on rumors and partial information.
- To act as a lobbying group on behalf the St. George’s merchants specifically and the community in general.
Major lobbying initiatives included implementation of Saturday ferry service from Dockyard when a cruise ship is in port, ensuring that the Holland America Veendam would visit the East End in 2010 and the lobbying of government to temporarily reopen the St. George’s golf club, which was unsuccessful. The East End Division continues to meet and strengthen relationships with both government and the private sector groups to discuss ways and means of increasing economic activity in the East End.
- To counter balance the negativity presently associated with St. Georges.
The East End Division has been successful in increasing its media profile and providing positive counter balance in response to the media’s negative reporting of the East End.
